Vijf voertuigen van cipiers hebben in de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag vuur gevat in de gevangenis van Itter. Het onderzoek loopt, maar mogelijk gaat het om brandstichting. Het gevangenispersoneel hield deze namiddag een protestactie.
De brandweer van Tubeke kreeg rond 0.20 uur telefoon. Vijf voertuigen van cipiers stonden in lichterlaaie. Aanvankelijk dacht het parket van Nijvel aan een ongeval. Daarbij zou een oververhitte batterij het vuur veroorzaakt hebben.
Een gerechtsdeskundige kwam vanochtend ter plaatse. In de namiddag verduidelijkte het parket van Nijvel dat de piste van brandstichting nu de voorkeur had gekregen. Op de camerabeelden zou menselijke aanwezigheid te zien zijn op het moment van de brand.
Het gevangenispersoneel hield deze namiddag een protestactie. Het merendeel van de agenten die om 14 uur moesten beginnen, is volgens een vakbondsbron pas om 15.15 uur de gevangenis binnengegaan.

In an interview in "De Morgen" with a spokesperson of the Ministry of Justice and of the Union of the Guards, they are saying that guards get more and more harassed by prisoners, ex-prisoners, friends and family of prisoners. They say it is very frequently that a guard is recognized when he is not on duty, gets insulted and even beaten. Also threats are often made, which then lead to repressailles in front of their houses etc etc. The Union is saying that "a molotov against the house of a guard is no longer an exception" and the Ministry denounces the increase of intimidation and threats against the guards and the staff of the prison, quoting an exemple where "guards, doctors, directors and social assistents working in the isolation module of the prison of Bruges get insulted when they leave the prison, harrassed and systematicaly photographs are taken from them."
